‘As I cam o’er the Cairney Mount’ was published in James Johnson’s Scots Musical Museum in 1796. It is thought to be Burns’s polite adaptation of a bawdy folksong. The original is included in The Merry Muses of Caledonia (1799); a collection of bawdy song and verse associated with Robert Burns.
