Musing On The Roaring Ocean – Davidona Pittock
Performed by Davidona Pittock
Davina Pittock
Burns composed this song for a Mrs McLachlan, whose husband was serving as an officer in the East Indies. The tune to which the song is set, ‘Druimionn dubh’ has Jacobite associations. The line, ‘Talk of him that’s far awa’, can be used to refer to Charles Edward Stuart, who like the officer is also, over the ocean. It was first published in James Johnson’s Scots Musical Museum (1788).
