Burns refers to ‘Ca’ the Ewes to the Knows’ as ‘a beautiful song’ in ‘the old scotch taste, yet I do not know that ever air or words were in print before.’ It has been suggested that the composer Stephen Clarke took the song down from the singing of a clergyman, John Clunzie (1757 – 1819), in 1789.
